Warmframe Invited to Participate in the Hong Kong Joint Symposium on Building Industry Innovation

On November 19, 2024, the Asia Technical Team of Warmframe Technology was invited to participate in the Hong Kong Joint Symposium, co-organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The symposium brought together leading experts and scholars from architectural design, building services engineering, energy, and sustainability to explore the latest developments and future directions of the high-performance building sector.

Held under the theme “The Future of the Building Industry,” the symposium focused on the in-depth application of intelligence, high-performance design, sustainability, and innovative technologies in building design and construction. Distinguished speakers included prominent industry experts and leaders such as Mr. Vince Arnhold and Ms. Ruth Carter from CIBSE (UK), and Mr. Vince Ho, Secretary of the Buildings Department of the HKSAR Government, among others.

As one of the invited speakers, Mr. Steve Chou of Warmframe Technology, together with Mr. Richard Lee, Director of the Façade Engineering Department at AECOM, co-authored a key chapter of the paper titled “Completing the Sustainability Puzzle—Thermally Broken Windows as a Pathway to Carbon Neutrality.” Mr. Chou delivered a technical presentation at the symposium, sharing the latest research findings and practical experience with industry peers. The presentation highlighted the innovative practices of Warmframe Technology’s Asia Technical Team in the field of building energy efficiency and provided valuable insights for the wider industry.

At the symposium, Mr. Chou’s research presentation focused on enhancing the building sector’s capabilities in low-carbon and energy-efficient technologies. He proposed a series of innovative solutions, including localized BIM (Building Information Modeling), the application of NFRC THERM thermal modeling in subtropical climates, and analytical studies on how high-performance, thermally broken window and curtain wall systems contribute to high-performance, sustainable, and low-carbon buildings in tropical and subtropical regions. These technical approaches not only support effective implementation during the construction phase, but also extend into the operational phase, offering comprehensive support for full life-cycle building asset management.

Mr. Chou further elaborated on the technical advantages of thermally broken window systems and their critical role in achieving building energy efficiency and carbon neutrality goals. Drawing on real-world case studies from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, he analyzed the performance of different thermal break solutions in relation to policy requirements, technical implementation, and energy-saving outcomes, and discussed the future potential of thermal break technologies in reducing carbon emissions and optimizing building thermal performance. Leveraging Warmframe’s extensive project experience, he demonstrated how technological innovation can effectively support the building industry’s sustainability objectives. His research emphasized the importance of thermally broken windows in reducing heat transfer and improving overall building energy performance, while calling for stronger industry collaboration to accelerate the adoption and dissemination of innovative technologies. He noted that traditional building design approaches are no longer sufficient to meet the increasingly stringent energy and carbon reduction requirements of today’s industry, and that the widespread application of thermal break technology represents a key breakthrough on the path toward carbon neutrality.

“Thermally broken windows are not merely a technical solution; they are one of the essential pieces in building a sustainable future,” Mr. Chou stated during his presentation. “They reduce overall building energy consumption, improve indoor thermal comfort, and offer new design perspectives for the industry.” His presentation provided an in-depth analysis of the full life-cycle value of thermally broken window systems, from design through operation.

During the symposium, Mr. Chou not only shared Warmframe’s technical achievements but also engaged in in-depth discussions with industry experts on the future development of the building sector. He emphasized that Warmframe consistently upholds the principles of innovation and sustainability in the development and promotion of intelligent building solutions. Through his professional insights and forward-looking technical perspectives, Mr. Chou received broad recognition from industry peers. The jointly authored paper with AECOM not only demonstrated Warmframe’s leadership in façade energy-efficiency innovation, but also offered new pathways for sustainable development within the building industry.
