Warmframe Supports China’s First Net-Zero Carbon Grade A Supertall Office Tower

The Beijing CBD Z6 supertall office project, designed by the world-renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, has recently passed the Net-Zero Carbon Building Evaluation System and become China’s first supertall building to achieve the “Net-Zero Carbon Grade A” certification. Serving as the regional headquarters of HSBC, the project sets a new benchmark for high-density urban development through its innovative sustainable design approach and advanced low-carbon technologies.

  • Z6 Project: A Model of Net-Zero Carbon Architecture

Located in the core area of Beijing’s Central Business District, the Z6 project is a key component of a large-scale development comprising three high-rise buildings and a central park. As a 33-storey supertall office tower, the building achieves a 47% reduction in operational carbon emissions through high-efficiency MEP systems, intelligent building management, and renewable energy integration. The remaining 53% of emissions are offset through off-site renewable energy, enabling the project to reach a net-zero carbon target across its full life cycle. The project is also pursuing China Three-Star Green Building Certification, LEED Gold, and WELL Platinum certification to comprehensively enhance sustainability and occupant health performance.

  • Façade Design: Balancing Aesthetics and Performance

For supertall buildings, the curtain wall system plays a critical role in achieving energy-efficiency targets, and the Z6 project presented significant challenges. Beijing’s hot-summer, cold-winter climate required the façade to maintain high transparency while effectively limiting heat transfer and reducing HVAC loads. The façade geometry integrates multiple atria and terraces, demanding high standards for airtightness, watertightness, and thermal-bridge mitigation at complex connection details. In addition, materials were required to be low-carbon, recyclable, and durable in order to support the project’s net-zero carbon objectives.

  • Warmframe Thermal Break Blanket: Solving Thermal Challenges

To meet these stringent requirements, Warmframe’s innovative curtain wall thermal break blanket technology was adopted as a core solution. With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.018 W/(m·K), the system significantly reduces thermal bridging in curtain wall frames and lowers the overall façade U-value. Its lightweight design and adaptable thickness allow seamless integration into the complex aluminum framing systems of the Z6 façade without compromising transparency or architectural expression. With a recyclability rate of up to 95% and a production carbon footprint reduced by approximately 60% compared to conventional insulation materials, the solution aligns closely with the project’s full life-cycle carbon reduction strategy.

In the Z6 project, Warmframe thermal break blankets were applied at critical envelope junctions, including connections between atrium glass façades and metal frames, effectively limiting heat transfer. Measured results show that the overall curtain wall U-value improved by approximately 30% compared to conventional designs, contributing to an estimated 15% annual reduction in cooling energy consumption and providing essential technical support for achieving net-zero carbon certification.

  • Driving the Industry Forward Through Sustainable Innovation

The success of the Z6 project highlights the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration. The forward-looking architectural vision of Foster + Partners, the sustainable development strategy of Oceanwide Group, and Warmframe’s innovative material technologies together delivered a landmark net-zero carbon building. As the global transition toward carbon-neutral architecture accelerates, Warmframe’s curtain wall thermal break solutions are expected to be widely applied in future supertall buildings and green developments, offering replicable and scalable low-carbon solutions for the construction industry.
